Watch BearPaw`s over 30 legal education videos on YouTube! Through workshops and teaching materials, the concept of taking charge of one`s own rights and obligations is promoted. The community also receives information on resources that can help address the root cause of individual legal situations. There are also workshops designed to help parents get out of abusive relationships while keeping the family intact and developing parenting skills. BearPaw Media and Education produces and distributes culturally relevant public legal education and information (PLEI) publications, videos and workshops created by Indigenous peoples for Indigenous peoples in Alberta. Our goal is to increase individual legal skills and build individual capacity through multimedia resources that encourage indigenous peoples to determine themselves as they navigate legal systems. During this evolution, we have continued to fill the gaps in public legal education through the resources provided by Indigenous peoples to Indigenous peoples. We intend to continue this legacy in the future. Bear Paw Media was founded in 1981. The Bear Paw Legal Education and Resource Centre was established in 2006. In 2006, while BearPaw Media Productions was still in operation, Native Counselling Services of Alberta established the Alberta Aboriginal Legal Education Centre to conduct legal education research and create resources specific to Aboriginal communities. From there, the center first became the BearPaw Legal Education and Resource Centre (?), then in 2015 the BearPaw Legal Education.
Slowly and naturally, BearPaw Media Productions merged with BearPaw Legal Education to form what is now BearPaw Media and Education. The program is considered reproducible. The most important thing in trying to replicate the program would be to understand the target audience and develop strategies and partnerships to ensure that the target audience can access legal education materials in different ways. There are 9 employees in the program and 7 are women. Employees regularly submit ideas for legal training and employees are involved in the entire production and marketing process. We recognize that many Indigenous peoples are often victims of racism and discrimination in justice systems while feeling alienated from legal jargon and procedures. We strive to create multimedia that supports and guides Indigenous peoples through these complex legal systems. Our goal is to make legal information accessible to those who need it most. BearPaw resources can also be used by members of government, not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions and others who support Indigenous people.
